Character name: Kainé
Age: 17

Background: set phasers for sadness

Personality:
Kainé has an interesting vocabulary, if by interesting you mean she swears like a sailor taught her how. Rare is the conversation that goes by without at least one f-bomb, and if she's especially pissed, she gets creative with her threats to fuck a guy up six ways to Sunday. Unluckily for everyone in her vicinity, it isn't all that difficult to piss Kainé off, either. Annoying dungeon puzzles, bosses that won't die fast enough, and people making eye contact with her are all somewhere on her shitlist.

She's standoffish at best. Every time Nier and crew visit a town, she hangs around outside of it instead of going in. She hates making nice to people or otherwise making small talk, and she constantly acts as if she doesn't give a single fuck what people think about her. To a degree, this is absolutely true, as she brushes off people talking shit about her like it's no big deal, and she refuses to try and appease them in any way whatsoever. To a smaller degree, it's clear that people not accepting her sticks in her craw, as she's decided to cut her critics off at the pass and reject them first. Like all things, Kainé reacts to her problems with anger, and in this case, more of a teeth-clenched variety than the threats a bossfight causes.

Thing is, she cares a lot deep down. Why else would she dedicate her life to protecting a town that's nigh constantly rejected her? Give her an inch of credit and she'll take a mile, and she's quick to warm to folks who remind her of herself, as her easy acceptance of Emil and all his issues goes to show. Her caring may involve more bluntness than necessary, but she snaps Weiss out of trying to join the big bad, ends up calling in a favor at Façade to save their prince, and sticks around with Nier after avenging her Grandma's death despite all protests to the contrary. Her grandma in particular is a huge influence here, as she inspired almost everything Kainé does, from swearing to not giving a fuck what people think to the outfit (which barely counts as one).

Without her, she doesn't really see what there is to live for. She's convinced she's failed her by letting her die in the first place and not avenging her death fast enough, and she's filled with self-loathing on account of being half-shade and intersex, the intersex part coming first. She's very aware that the things she's doing are harmful, and that Shades are sentient, but if she allows herself to Care about them, she'll lose herself to the Shade possessing her, so she keeps her mouth shut and pushes these feelings down as far as they can go. She requests that she be killed before this happens, even going so far as to heroically sacrifice herself to guard a door, because if there's one thing her Grandma taught her, it's to be herself.

She grows over the course of the game, learning that it's Okay to care about others and let people in, after spending so long keeping everybody out. It shocks her when people care about her well-being or otherwise reach out to her, and she's always flustered when they push her Not That Big An Asshole buttons. She retains her edge and sharpness, but she softens over time and especially so after the frozen in a door way time-skip halfway through. She figured her story would be over about ten times by now, and the fact that it's still going almost against her will, well, it's kind of hard to shake the feeling that she's worth something to these people.

Wish:
She would explicitly wish for "the power to kill fucking all of them", since she's being contracted from the time of her Grandma's death. It's… really throwing her for a loop, and she feels she has nothing to live for if she can't avenge what's happened. She's got nothing to live for after that, either, when it comes right down to it. Ideally, she'd want to gain the power here and go back to her old world and put Hook, the Shade that killed her Grandma, right in the ground, but since that's not gonna be happening any time soon, if she can stop even one person from getting eaten by a Nightmare (or whatever the hell they're called), then that'll just have to do. And if she kills enough of them, that's gotta be just as good. She wants to pour out all her hatred and put it into how she fights. Since she's also literally dying at the time, the wish will fix that problem, too.

Passive ability: Since she said "All of them", her abilities have to be tailored to fighting Groups of Nightmares as opposed to solo encounters. Her passive ability, therefore, would be a dramatic increase in speed to allow her to strike, say, a crowd of people really, really quickly, and rush back out. There's still limitations, of course (people get tired), but as she gains experience, she can keep up the speed longer and longer.

Active ability: Well, she wants to "kill" things, and viciously at that, so her active ability is going to be that she can strike a target multiple times and stack the damage, like a fighting game combo. Initially, these won't be very many hits in a row (say 2-3), but as she levels up, she can stack up more hits (say a dozen), and each hit does more damage than the last. There's no special elemental effects or abilities attached to the strikes, they're just pure stabbing/slashing power. The problem is that putting all her power into these strikes will leave her staggered for a few moments after, so she's either gotta kill what she's up against in those strikes or she's in trouble.

Weapon: Her weapon's going to be a dagger. No fuss, no muss, just get in there, kill shit, and get out.
